Complex Problem Solving in Europe

Between Dream and Action

The objective in Europe is to develop technologies for complex problem solving in science, industry, business and society. Modelling and simulation became an inherent part of many research and technological development domains. Precisely for this reason there is a need for a better definition and understanding. This will enable to draw effective roadmaps, simultaneously allowing for innovation and maximum synergy.

Short-, medium- and long-term developments should be embedded in a more coherent logical framework. Private- and public interests must be respected. Multi-disciplinary approaches will require new specific tools and methods, supporting interoperability of applications and new generations of simulation, visualisation and data-mining tools. Real-time large-scale simulation environments, implying distributed and interactive systems, are a must in Europe if we want to cope e.g. with emergency cases in cities. Training systems, e.g. to increase flight safety, deserve the most advanced quality treatment. Agent-based simulation, non-parametric systems modelling and simulation, simulation and visualisation of logical structures (such as GRID-related optimisation) to name a few, are hardly to be found in an open pre-competitive arena on an industrial level in Europe.
