VENUE: DARMSTADT - GERMANY

Once a residence of Hessian Landgrafen and Grand Dukes, Darmstadt developed into the capital city of the German state of Hessen.  Following nearly complete destruction of the inner city in the Second World War, Darmstadt was to pass this title on to Wiesbaden. The city's identity had to be re-established from the ground up. Therefore emphasis was put on the so-called "smokeless industry", until the advent of computer technology.

Darmstadt calls itself the home for a number of reputed international institutes such as the European space research organizations ESOC and EUMETSAT, the Heavy Ion Research Association (GSI), the GMD Research Centre Information Technology GmbH, the Research Centre Deutsche Telekom and the Fraunhofer Institute for Graphic Data Processing, to name only a few. Commercial firms of international format (Merck, Röhm, Schenck, Wella) on one hand and institutions of the arts (Industrial Design, New Music etc.) and sciences (several universities) are within close vicinity.  Today, Darmstadt, located in the middle of the Starkenburg Region and at the outskirts of one of the most active economic areas, the ‘Rhein-Main’, is considered as one of the centres for information, communication and software technologies.

Furthermore, Darmstadt is also a  ‘City of Science’, and a city in which the arts are alive. It has also been a home for the avant-garde since the beginning of the 20th century. Jugendstil art in the Mathildenhöhe artists' colony was a centre of reform movements in Germany around the turn of the century.
