Analytical and Numerical Modelling Techniques

The submission of papers is solicited for the "5th Analytical and Numerical Modelling Techniques Conference" which is organized by SCS (The Society for Computer Simulation International) as part of the ESM'98 (European Simulation Multiconference 1998) in Manchester.

Motivation:
While for a long time simulation has been the predominant method of choice for many complex evaluation studies, analytical and numerical methods have recently become increasingly popular. With the advent of storage capacity and computing power even the numerical analysis of large models has become feasible and cost-effective.

Over the recent years technical progress has propelled many methodological breakthroughs due to growing acceptance and research. In many fields of application involving performance and reliability modelling of discrete flow systems, such as computer systems, high speed communication networks, flexible manufacturing systems and workflow management systems, it has been widely recognized that analytical and numerical methods can successfully complement simulation methods, while both techniques have merits of their own. However, there are still many important and interesting problems to be resolved such as those involving stochastic Petri nets and queueing network models with finite capacity and multiple job classes under various blocking mechanisms and synchrinisation constraints, bounds and theoretical properties, exact analysis, approximation methods and numerical solutions.

Contributions based on exact and approximate methods as well as applications are encouraged but not restricted to the following topics:

Techniques and Algorithms

Evaluation Studies of Analytical and Numerical Modelling

Software Tools for Analytical and Numerical Modelling

History of Simulation

Session for Invited Papers only. Covers topics from the early days to the current scene.

Student Papers

Partners for Projects Sessions

This particular session(s) will be organized by SCS to give potential project teams or individuals the opportunity to present their research in order to link up with fellow researchers for future research projects. Those wishing to participate in this session need to send to the SCS office, the title and short abstract about their research.

KEYNOTE AND INVITED SPEECHES

The Keynote Presentation will be given by Bob Howe from Applied Dynamics Inc.

"Looking back to a period of 25 years simulation in Europe"
Eugene Kerckhoffs , Delft University of Technology, Delft, The Netherlands and Ghislain Vansteenkiste, University of Ghent, Ghent, Belgium

"The History of SCS International"
Roy Crosbie, Calstate University Chico, Chico, USA

Further invited talks will be given by

TUTORIALS

"Field Programmable Digital Circuit Design and Simulation"
by D.P.F.Moeller and C. Siemers, University of Clausthal, Clausthal, Germany

Further tutorials can be proposed. for selection by the conference committee

VENDOR SESSIONS, DEMONSTRATIONS AND VIDEO PRESENTATIONS

For demonstrations or video sessions, please contact SCS International at the European Office. Special sessions well be set up for vendor presentations in coordination with the scientific programme.

ORGANIZED MEETINGS

User Group meetings for simulation languages and tools can be organised on Monday. If you would like to arrange a meeting, please contact the Conference Chairs. We will be happy to provide a meeting room and other necessary equipment.

EXHIBITION

Exhibition space is ideally situated at the entrance to the conference. It also contains the conference registration desk and is the site for all coffee breaks. The exhibition will have a special focus on the hardware aspects of complex systems simulation. Because of the character of the celebration, we particularly welcome those companies that employ hardware especially suited for complex calculations, such as vector and parallel computers, mini-supercomputers, hardware accelerators for standard equipment, and distributed computer systems.
